You can apply for a Tennessee marriage license at any county clerk’s office. Either the county clerk or deputy clerk will be able to assist you. The marriage license application will ask for your current name, birth name, birth date, birthplace, gender, address, address after marriage, phone number, social security number, race, education completed, marital history, and parents’ names, birth names, and birthplaces. You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a marriage license.

The Tennessee marriage license fee varies by county, ranging from $93.50 to $107.50, with $100 being the most common price point.

What if I can’t apply in person?

You can submit a notarized absentee application or statement if you’re a member of the U.S. armed forces serving overseas, incarcerated, or unable to appear due to a disability. Otherwise, you must apply together, in person.

How long will it take to get my marriage license?

You will receive your marriage license immediately, you will be able to get married as soon as you get it! But you only have 30 days for it to be valid once you receive it. If you don’t get married within 30 days, you will have to reapply.

How do I file my marriage license after I get married?

More often than not your officiant will do this work for you. Your officiant is responsible for signing your marriage certificate along with any witnesses and then file it with the county clerk. Make sure you check with your officiant to certain if they are going to take care of this or not, because you only have 30 days once you obtain the certificate to file. If your officiant doesn’t take care of this you can simply take it to the county clerk yourself and you will receive your marriage license in the mail.

How do I obtain a copy of my marriage license?

A certified copy of your marriage certificate can be purchased for $5 from the county clerk’s office where you applied for your marriage license. The state’s office of vital records also sells it for $15.
