Finding the perfect wedding officiant is just as important as finding the perfect venue or the perfect dress. You want someone that you connect with, understands your vision, brings a sense of calmness to what can be a very stressful time, someone who is professional and experienced. We asked Benita Livingston of Living Ceremonies the most important questions to ask your officiant before your big day:

  • What do you love about being a wedding officiant?
  • What qualities do be bring to your work?
  • Tell me about your favorite wedding?
  • Tell me about a time when things didn’t go as planned and how you handled it?
  • Do you offer premarital sessions? If so, how many? What is covered in the sessions?
  • What type of weddings have you officiated?
  • What is your ceremony style?
  • How long have you been a wedding officiant and how many weddings have you done?
  • Are you available to travel? If so, is that and extra fee?
  • What are your fees?
  • Are your available on our date?
  • Can we write our own vows?
  • Can you legally perform a marriage at our location?
  • Will you be responsible for filing our marriage license?
  • What time will you arrive?
  • Can we include our culture, traditions and/or religion into the ceremony?
  • Is the ceremony customed written for us?
  • What happens if you are sick or there is an emergency?
  • Will you be attending the wedding rehearsal and or reception?

These are just a few of the questions you might consider asking a wedding officiant. It is important to remember that connection is the key. Your wedding officiant should be someone you trust and makes you feel comfortable and at ease.
