Honeymoon Guide for Jamaica
We asked April Dupree of Main Street Travel Co. about some of her favorite honeymoon destinations and she gave us a fabulous full guide to Jamaica!
As a Travel Planner, I often get the question, “Where is the best place to go on a Honeymoon?” Honestly, that’s a very loaded question! There are so many destinations around the World that are fantastic for Honeymoons, but it also depends highly on you as a couple; what you enjoy and do not enjoy doing.
This blog, however, is not about how to choose your best Honeymoon destination. That will be a message for another day! Today, I want to focus on Jamaica. This beautiful island, settled in the Caribbean, surrounded by beautiful blue waters, is a perfect Honeymoon destination for beach lovers and adventurers alike.
Some Jamaican Facts:
Jamaica is currently set on the Eastern Time Zone. They do not participate in Daylight Savings, so for those of us who live in states that DO participate, you’ll want to make sure you check the time difference when you travel.
Jamaica is home to 2.935 Million people! They speak English and Jamaican Patois. The currency used is the Jamaican dollar, however, the US dollar is also widely accepted (so there is no need to exchange your money before, or during, arrival).
What Do You Need?
You will need a valid passport (valid at 6 months past the day you return home) and the C5 immigrations and customs form. You may find that form HERE. Please note that you MUST fill out this form online now to enter Jamaica. These were the forms that you used to fill out on the plane, but they have gone 100% digital now. You do not have to pay for this form, so, if you are asked for a CC you are not on the right website.
Phrases to Know
Some common phrases you’ll hear in Jamaica are Irie, Ya Mon, and Inner luv. Irie means Everything is alright and fine. Ya Mon means No problem or Okay. Inner luv is something you would tell a host or friends when you have had a good time and you are leaving. You can use some of these popular phrases to impress the locals!
Best times to Travel, Where to Stay, and What to do:
Best time to Travel
Jamaica has warm weather all year round (the average high is 85 degrees C), but the BEST time to travel to Jamaica is November through Mid-December. The weather is mild and warm and you’ll also find good pricing for flights and lodging. June through November is considered Hurricane season, but they tend to see more activity during August – October. October is also the rainiest month. January through March is peak season, so pricing will be higher and availability will be lower.
Where to Stay
There are hundreds of Resorts in Jamaica with many of them being All-Inclusive. All-inclusive means that all of your food, drinks, showes, non-motorized land and water sports are all included in the price. My favorite All-Inclusive Resorts are the Sandals Properties. There are 7 Sandals Resorts in Jamaica; 2 in the Montego Bay Area, 3 in the Ocho Rios area, 1 in Negril, and 1 in White House. They all have different vibes and scenery, but ALL of them have the same class of service and luxury! You can check them out HERE.
What to do
There is so much to do on this beautiful Island. You could zipline or take an ATV through the Jungle! Ride horses on land AND water! Take a Catamaran cruise to see the island from a different angle or swim with the dolphins. A very neat excursion is the Luminous Lagoon Experience. The lagoon is home to millions of microorganisms that emit a flash of light when touched; a rare phenomenon that occurs only four places worldwide. Check out all of the options HERE, on the Island Routes website.
How long should I stay
After all of this information, you’re probably asking yourself, how long should we stay? That is a great question! I personally have visited Jamaica 3 times over the last year and 1/2. I would have to say that staying the minimum of 5 nights is good, but if your schedule allows, I would suggest 7 nights to be the magic number. If you are traveling from a destination that requires you to make a connecting flight, you’ll have a pretty long travel day on the very first night of your trip. Travel time to the island could be upwards of 6 to 7 hours and then once you get to the island (depending on where your resort is located), you could have another 2 to 3 hours before you are unpacking in your room. Having a full 4 to 6 nights that aren’t your travel days really allow you to take that time to enjoy your resort, enjoy each other, and enjoy the island.
